The Amazing Race

One of the Smyth family favorite shows is “The Amazing Race.” It’s one of the handfuls of shows that we record and follow each season. If you haven’t seen it, 12 teams of two race around the world doing various task and solving various riddles. At the end, the final team wins a million bucks!

Brittany and I have always dreamed of someday going on this reality show. Actually it would be better TV if she went with Sharon, but that will never happen. We have been talking about doing it for as long as the show has been on TV. The funny thing is that Brittany recently met a gentleman who is good friends with one of the show’s creators. He wrote a glowing e-mail to this creator and suggested that we be cast in the next show. The creator of the show asked us to film a video and send it to them. So, today, we ran around in bright clothing filming a silly audition video for the Amazing Race!

We will fill out the onlne application and send the video directly to the show’s creator and we will see what happens! In our closing comments on the video, Brittany said, “My Dad and I have a special relationship and have been going on Father/Daughter get aways since I was 5 years old. Going on the Amazing Race would be the Ultimate Father / Daughter get away.” Come on, who can say NO to that!? I will keep you posted!

As I was thinking about the Amazing Race, It occurred to me that we are all in an Amazing Race. 1 cor 9:24 says “In the race, all the runners run, but only one wins the prize. Run in such a way that you may win the prize.”

If Brittany and I get cast on the Amazing Race, we are not going there hoping to finish 4th. We will be going there with our sights set on WINNING. Why would we settle for anything less? Now, we may not actually win, but our effort level will reflect that of someone who is trying to win. We will have the heart of a warrior and compete until the game is over.

I want to issue a simple challenge for you today. Approach life, your marriage and your parenting with the same resolve. Why would you ever want a “4th place” marriage? Why would you give your daughter anything less than a “first place” effort?

This week, have a winning effort level, the heart of a warrior and keep going until the game is over.

Run to WIN in your parenting…. It’s up to you to figure out what that means for you.

Just finished the book and it was great….maybe 44 years late for me, but it made me think about how important that ALL new fathers get the opportunity to do what you did. the ‘rules, however, are true and still are true today. my girls too are my prized possessions. your book shows how important it is to continually remind them of that point.
