Brittany Smyth, daughter of Alan Smyth who writes the blog on Mondays and just authored the book Prized Possession, has some great words of wisdom and advice for all of you dads. I think it’s important to hear from girls themselves about their thoughts on the importance of the role of the father in their daughter’s life and Brittany had great answers to 2 important questions I asked her so I thought I would pass them along to you all ….
1) Do you think your relationship with your father has influenced how you see yourself? If so – how?
“Above all else, my dad has taught me my self-worth. He has empowered me to be a strong, independent woman. I’ve never felt the need to have a boyfriend just for the sake of having a boyfriend. My dad has built me up to be a confident woman, and because of that, I’ve honestly never felt like I had to find my worth in guys. Don’t get me wrong, I still struggle with the same insecurities that every girl struggles with, and I would love to get married one day, BUT the woman I am today is not defined by what relationship I do or do not have with a guy. My worth is not found in a boyfriend or worldly affirmations. It is found in Jesus; and I have my dad to thank for showing me this.”
2) If you could give a dad advice on what is important about raising a daughter, what are 3 things you would tell him.
“In an earlier blog entry, I mentioned that the biggest piece of advice I would give dads is to be present in their daughter’s lives. To me, this means being intentional, consistent, and relentless. I know us girls don’t always make it easy, but it’s what we long for. The love of a father, which cannot be replaced by anything else. It’s not just saying I love you. It’s the actions behind the words. It’s your presence in her life. It’s the pursuit of a relationship with her. This is what she deserves.”
