If you have not read Bob Goff’s book, Love Does, pick up a copy and give it a read. It is delightful and hilarious. Bob Goff has captured the essence of doing life and relationships with sense of adventure and passion. His “capers” take him into and through many unlikely encounters. The simple and powerful truth that runs through Bob’s stories and life is right on the cover of his book, Love Does.
There are lots of different ideas about love, but love is not an idea. There are plenty of books written about love, but love is not about what we know. There are real and powerful feelings that tend to travel with love, but love is not a feeling. Love is an action. It is something we do. Love does not stay parked; it is active and flowing always finding expression in real time and real relationships. In Paul’s letter to the Galatians he writes in chapter 5 verse 6; “ The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.” To the believers in Ephesus, Paul admonishes them to “ live a life of love.” (5:1)
If love is what counts, and it is to define our whole lives, then how do we walk it out? Love needs legs. I am going to get practical here and suggest a little acrostic to help us, Do love. As dads we need to walk out our love towards our daughters in real ways. The acrostic reminder is L.E.G.S.
L. Learn something together with your daughter
A dance class; A Home depot seminar; An Apple class; A golf lesson; A cooking class; An archery lesson
E. Enjoy something together
See a movie, Go bowling, Find a great dessert and go, Build and fly a kite.
Go on a hike, Take some fun pictures, and Visit the puppy store
G. Give something together
Help at a feeding center; Grow some vegetables for a food bank, Volunteer for a Special needs event; Have a garage sale and use the money to sponsor a child with world Vision
S. Share something together
Share some embarrassing moment; share some dream your looking forward to; share your favorite book: share your favorite dive restaurant; share a favorite song; find a great worship concert-get good tickets-buy the t-shirt.
At the end of your life, the only love you will regret is the love that went unexpressed. Do Some Love this week!
Grace and Peace.
