S**T Happens

Life is unpredictable. Parenting is hard. While being a great parent has a lot to do with how your daughter turns out, there is definitely a wild card factor. It is possible that you could be working hard at doing everything right. If you have been following this blog, you have gleaned tons of great, practical tools to help you navigate the complex path of parenting.

However, as great as you might be, as strong as your faith might be and as good intentioned as you might be….

To coin a popular, somewhat vulgar phrase…. “S**T Happens….

poddy shoulders

I want to take a moment and encourage you that even if you are a great Dad, your daughter still might go down a rough path. I know plenty of guys who carry a burden of kids who are not rising up the way they had hoped. I know some guys who are not pumped about who their daughters married. I know some guys who wished things were different with their kids. I know some guys who got the unpleasant news that their daughters were pregnant too early.

There is so much more OUT of our control than is actually IN our control. All you can do, is all you can do. Be encouraged and see this parenting thing as a marathon rather than a sprint. And see it as partnership between you, God and your daughter. It is not all on you!

At the end of the day, stuff happens that will not be your first choice and that’s ok. Stay engaged, stay focused, keep the big picture in view. I told a friend this past week who was frustrated with his own kid. “In the words of Maverick from Top Gun, ‘Relax about the MIG.”

I also acknowledge that you might be going through some very complicated issues with your kids. I don’t mean to minimize your situation. I just mean to encourage you and tell you to relax and keep going!

God bless you and know that I am cheering you on.

Press on!

  1. I was one of those my dad cried over after I moved out at 21 and walked down, what for my family was a shocking 4 year path…. But dads, God hears prayer! Even the hard ones like “God do whatever it takes but spare her life.” Prayers … Redemption, restoration are both possible … And hold onto : train up a child in the way they should go, and … You know the rest… When they are ? Old? They will not depart…. So in Gods time, they will return dads!
In the meantime, God will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are fixed on him … Peace to you dads going through tough things with daughter (and sons).
